The village of Völs was first mentioned in 888. There is archaeological evidence, however, that the area has been settled since the Bronze Age, and possibly considerably longer. Traces of Bronze Age settlements in the form of earth walls have been found on prominent hilltops such as Peterbühl near Völs, or Fingerbühl at Völser Aicha. For the last 100 years there has been considerable archaeological interest in the area. A small sensation in archaeological terms took place when the digging work started to build an underground car park in the centre of Völs. Alongside scattered findings from the times of the Romans and the Iron Age, archaeologists found enormous layers of rock dating back to the Copper Age, proving that as early as the 4th century BC our ancestors had brought giant boulders to the area and thus artificially formed a terrace of several hundred square metres. They subsequently covered the rock with a fine sand and settled down. The small items found are of great interest too: remains of clay vessels and flint tools, as well as a very carefully worked and sharpened stone axe. The most prominent item, however, is a musical instrument resembling a flute, made from the bone of a goat, which is the oldest musical instrument found in South Tyrol.
