The market municipality of St. Lorenzen is situated in the middle of the Pustertal, at the confluence of Rienz and Gader. It is surrounded by maily afforested hills and wide-stretching fields, “watched over” by the Michelsburg (castle) and Sonnenburg (castle). An excursion to these two sights is a must, given that an old Roman station has been found there. The boundary stone (lat. Miles) that can be found directly next to the main country road is another indication of a former road used by the Romans to cross the Alps. Otherwise, St. Lorenzen is surrounded by many hills – ideal for long walks and forget the rest of the word. Several villages and picturesque hamlets are located nearby: Excavation of the Roman station Sebatum, which is goes far from “Schraffl-Bühel” opposite Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche (Holy Cross Church) downstream on both banks of the Rienz. Relics of dwellings, depots and troop quarters can be seen. |
