| Steinhaus is the main locality of the Arntal municipaly. In mediaeval times, copper exploration was initiated in nearby Prettau and over five centuries this mining activity contributed significantly to the economic improvement of the entire valley. The glut of cheap copper from America meant the end for the mine which was closed in 1893. In its food storeroom, the so-called “grain cabinet”, a mining museum has been opened in 2000 which gives an account of the hard work of the miners. However, Steinhaus has not only sights to offer. The scenery, too, is spectacular: Wonderful days of vacation at the skiarena Klausberg, long hikes in the Durreckgruppe and the Zillertal Alps. In Steinhaus, large, copperred coloured houses in the village centre attract attention. These are buildings of the ancient copper mine. Steinhaus was the administrative centre of the mine for several hundred years. The former “Faktorhaus” is now the Ahrntal municipality’s town hall. The ancient “Kornkasten” (grain cabinet) accommodates a mining museum. |
